Description

The new 2025 edition of the PLOT4AI deck has finally arrived. Created by Isabel Barberá, this deck offers a comprehensive methodology to help developers and those deploying AI systems identify and mitigate risks associated with AI.

It's been designed to bring together all stakeholders involved in an AI project, from developers and engineers to policymakers and legal experts, so they can collectively identify and manage potential threats throughout the AI lifecycle.

The deck includes 138 cards, each highlighting a specific threat that an AI system might encounter. These threats are organised into eight categories, covering technical, legal, social, and ethical risks in line with the latest AI regulations and standards.

Outcome

Identify the work needed to build safer and more responsible AI systems by identifying and managing potential risks throughout the AI lifecycle.

How to use PLOT4AI?

  • Preparation

    • Gather all relevant stakeholders.
    • Select the cards you want to use for the session (either randomly or by focusing on a specific category).
    • Optionally, create a simple Data Flow Diagram (DFD) of the system and its interaction elements.
  • Discussion

    • Read the front of each selected card aloud.
    • Discuss the possible threat as a group, keeping discussions brief (around two minutes per card).
    • Allow for extra time on more complex categories, such as Ethics & Human Rights, where deeper reflection may be needed.
  • Decision

    • Reach a group consensus on the answer to the card’s question.
    • Check the card to determine whether answering YES or NO identifies a threat.
    • If unsure, assume you may have found a potential threat.
    • Optionally, turn the card to read the recommended mitigations.
  • Documentation

    • Record all identified threats using the Threat Report Template.
    • Classify each threat as Low, Medium, or High risk to prioritise action.
    • Add notes such as threat ownership, possible mitigations, or any other relevant details.
  • Integration

Incorporate the findings into the project's development and risk management processes.

Overview

PLOT4AI contains 138 cards, each representing a threat related to AI. The cards display icons indicating when the threat can occur in one of the six AI system Life Cycle phases: Design, Input, Model, Output, Deploy and Monitor.

The cards are grouped into 8 categories of risk. Each card is labelled with at least one category, with some cards belonging to more than one.

Threat as Cards

The cards are colour-coded by category, but they all share the same format. Each one poses a threat as an elicitation question, which helps direct attention and foster engagement, particularly valuable during the design phase when numerous decisions must be addressed.
