Cybersecurity 101

This interactive training is a hands-on introduction to the world of cybersecurity, designed for people who want to be part of the conversation, not just passive recipients of technical advice.

This session, designed by Mike Novack, inventor of Byte Club, aims to empower individuals to actively engage in cybersecurity conversations, without fear or confusion.

Whether you're a complete beginner or someone who's had a brush with cyber issues, this session is your chance to understand the mindset of both attackers and defenders. Through interactive play, practical frameworks, and real-world scenarios, you'll gain the tools to evaluate digital risks and make informed decisions, at work or in your personal life.

What to expect?

  • Session overview

Cybersecurity Basics: Gain clarity on key ideas and learn to confidently take part in cybersecurity discussions (no technical background needed).

Learn by Playing: Use the Byte Club card game to explore real-world cyber attacks and defences. It’s an engaging way to grasp core concepts like the Cybersecurity Kill Chain and NIST Framework.

Tackle Real Problems: Practise applying what you’ve learned to real incidents and your own challenges, helping you make informed, risk-aware decisions.

  • How is the session structured?

The training begins with a brief introduction to core cybersecurity concepts, followed by a hands-on Byte Club game session where you'll learn by simulating real-world attacks and defences.

After playing, the group reflects on what they've learned through guided discussion.

You'll then move on to applying the concepts to real incidents and your own workplace challenges.

The session wraps up with practical next steps and resources to keep building your cybersecurity confidence.

  • Learning outcomes

You'll gain a clear understanding of how cyber attacks unfold and how defenders respond.

You'll learn to recognise each stage of an attack using the Cyber Kill Chain, apply the NIST Cybersecurity Framework to counter threats, and develop a practical mindset for assessing and managing digital risk in real-world situations.

Session Format and Materials

Sessions can be delivered either virtually (lasting 1 to 1.5 hours) or in person (typically 3 hours), depending on your location and preferences.

For in-person workshops, each participant will receive their own copy of the Byte Club game, along with a printed booklet featuring the slides from the session, ideal for future reference and continued learning.
