Turn Cyber Security Awareness into something people can practise

Formal awareness training introduces people to important cyber security concepts. Byte Club gives them a chance to put those concepts into play.

Cybersecurity Awareness Workshop

Using the Byte Club game created by Mike Novack, teams experience the attacker-versus-defender dynamic first-hand, exploring how attacks progress and how security decisions can help detect, protect against and respond to them.

Combine the game with a short presentation, Lunch & Learn or wider awareness workshop to create an engaging session that moves from learning the concepts to actually using them.

A simple workshop format

  • Introduce the concepts

    Briefly introduce the Cyber Kill Chain, the attacker/defender roles and any NIST concepts you want participants to explore.

    Keep the rules explanation short - the game itself does much of the teaching.

  • Play Byte Cub

    One player takes the role of the attacker, moving through the Kill Chain, while the other players work as defenders trying to detect, disrupt and stop the attack.

    As teams play, encourage the facilitator to watch how decisions are being made: where defenders act early, where they wait, and which stages the attacker manages to pass through.

  • Capture what happened

    At the end of the game, note how far the attacker progressed through the Kill Chain and where the defenders succeeded or failed to detect them.

    This gives the group a concrete game outcome to discuss.

  • Connect it to the real world

    Use the game state as the starting point for a debrief, breach case study or awareness discussion.

    Ask questions such as:

    • Where did detection fail?
    • What might have stopped the attacker earlier?
    • Which NIST functions or controls would have helped?
    • What does this look like in our own organisation?

Make it your own workshop

Run it as a Lunch & Learn, add it to your Cyber Security Awareness Month programme, use it alongside formal training or build it into a longer team workshop.

You can keep the format simple or develop it further with breach analysis, NIST discussions and other exercises.
