Byte Club Cybersecurity Game

Transforming cybersecurity into a fun and accessible experience for everyone.

What is the Byte Club card game?

Created by Mike Novack, Byte Club is a strategic card game that makes cybersecurity concepts easy and enjoyable to learn.

Through Byte Club’s engaging "capture the flag" gameplay, players gain practical insights into safeguarding digital information, countering cyberattacks, and understanding key concepts like the Cyber Kill Chain and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework.

What is in the deck?

The 72 card Byte Club deck contains 4 sets of 12 Reference Cards, 1 Data Flag Card, 1 Times Up Card and 57 Action Cards that represent steps in the Cyber Kill Chain or activities from the NIST Cybersecurity Framework. The actions captured on these cards simulate a real cybersecurity step or defense activity.

Game Setup

  • Place the Data Flag, Times Up, Govern, and Action Objective cards to the side.
  • Give each player a set of 3 Reference Cards.
  • Place the Game Set Up Card in the centre of the table.
  • Shuffle the Action Deck and divide it into 3 equal piles.
  • Shuffle the Data Flag Card into one pile and place it on top of another.
  • Shuffle the Times Up Card into a remaining smaller pile and place that one at the bottom of the largest pile.
  • Deal 4 Action Cards to each player.
  • Arrange the Action Deck, Govern, and Action Objective cards around the Game Set Up Card.
  • You're ready to play!

Each player takes turns clockwise. On your turn:

  • Play Cards

    • You may play any number of cards or none at all.
    • Resolve card effects one at a time.
    • After use, place cards face-up in front of you.
    • You may collect duplicates of the same card.
  • Draw a Card

    • Draw 1 Action Card at the end of your turn.
    • If you have 7 or more cards in hand, discard down to 6 before playing. Discarded cards are removed from the game and not placed in front of you.
    • If you ever have 0 cards and it is not your turn, draw 4 cards immediately.
  • How to win

The game ends and a player wins when either of the following is true:

    • The player has the Data Flag Card in hand and the Times Up Card is revealed.
    • The player has at least one of each Attack and Defend card type face-up in front of them.
